The award recognizes the nation's top male college rugby player. This is the 10th year of the Rudy Scholz Award, given each year since 2016 by the Washington Athletic Club in Seattle, Wash., with a trophy presented at an annual gala event in Seattle. Goff Rugby Report Editor Alex Goff oversees the selection committee. The award is named after rugby legend Rugby Scholz, who played the sport at Santa Clara, was decorated in two World Wars, and helped the USA win two Olympic Gold Medals in 15-a-side rugby in 1920 and 1924.
Treacy stated, "It is an absolute honor to receive the Rudy Scholz award, especially given how competitive college rugby has been this year, and I know there are so many other players who performed exceptionally. Firstly, I'd like to give thanks to God for the path he has led me on and for constantly providing for me. I'd like to give a huge thanks to all the teammates who have been a part of my journey at Central and have contributed to me as a player. Finally, special thanks need to be given to coaches Todd Thornley and Erik Hoium for growing me as a player and as a man, Janie Kluempers for keeping me healthy and on the field, and my family for supporting me on this journey and making all of this possible in the first place."
The Melbourne, Australia native is the first ever Wildcat and ninth different school to have a winner since the awards inception in 2016.
Head Coach Todd Thornley stated, "Watching Oscar win the Rudy Scholz Award, knowing the sacrifices he's made and the heart he's poured into this team, is incredibly satisfying and a great example for all of us to learn from. This season, it often felt like he carried the spirit of Wildcat Rugby on his back, delivering in the biggest moments and helping lead us to our fourth straight national quarterfinal appearance."
"In a year when our program is coming to an abrupt end, Oscar has given us a legacy we can be proud of. True to his character, he'll credit his teammates for creating the daily environment that allowed him to grow, push his limits, and showcase his talents. But those of us who were there knew leadership, humility, and drive made this season unforgettable for everyone involved. We could not be prouder of Oscar and achievements as a program in what is an incredibly challenging time for all of our student athletes, staff who worked directly with the team and alumni".
Treacy had a phenomenal match against #6 BYU where he recorded a hat trick of tries and led the 'Cats to a dominant 53-26 victory. He was also tabbed the 8x8 Sports D1A National Player of The Week for the week of January 30th, 2025. His leadership was exemplified on the field as he led the Wildcats to a Quarterfinal in which they lost a nail-biter to defending national champion, St. Mary's, 53-48.Print Friendly Version
