In response to the recent reclassification of Central Washington University’s men’s and women’s rugby teams from varsity status to club-level programs, a passionate group of alumni and supporters, have come together to form the Central Washington University Rugby Association—a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy and promoting the future of rugby at CWU.

Over the past two decades, CWU Rugby has earned a national reputation for competitive success and player development. The men’s and women’s teams have regularly competed at the highest levels of collegiate rugby, sending players to national teams and professional leagues.

The transition, announced earlier this year by the CWU Athletics Department, ended the programs’ formal affiliation with the university’s varsity sports structure. While this move sparked disappointment among players and alumni alike, it also galvanized the Wildcat rugby community to take decisive action.

The mission is to preserve the proud tradition of Central Washington rugby by connecting alumni, supporting current players, and promoting the long-term growth and excellence of the men’s and women’s clubs. This program has built character, leadership, and lifelong friendships for many years and the Association is committed to making sure future generations of CWU students have the same opportunity.

The CWU Rugby Association will serve as the central support hub for both programs, focusing on alumni engagement, player mentorship, and operational resources. The nonprofit aims to help maintain the high standards of performance and development that CWU rugby has become known for throughout the country.

The Association is currently working with club leadership to identify immediate needs, while also looking to build something sustainable, inclusive and long-term. Donation opportunities are available and events are being planned for the 2025-2026 season.
